iT100 Enrollment Best Practices

Regardless of the identification method in use, high quality enrollments on the iT100 are key to optimal performance. Following the below practices will help ensure a high-quality enrollment.

Where should the employee look during enrollment?

Many people want to look down at the LCD screen and not at the actual camera. When performing an enrollment on the iT100, it is best if the user looks at the actual camera (not the LCD screen, see below).

What can impact the quality of an enrollment?

• Lighting

  • Any device that utilizes camera-based facial recognition, like the iT100, can be impacted by the lighting of the environment. It is recommended that the iT100 be mounted in a location that provides a even amount of lighting on the employee's face.

  • If the lighting on the face is coming from one side or from the back, it can cause shadows to be projected on the face that can throw off the Facial Recognition.

  • Low levels of light on the face has also been known to increase the possibility of false rejections or false acceptance of other users. This can be more prevalent in employees with darker skin tones.

• Eyelids

  • Many people tend to squint as they look at the camera.  Employees should keep their eyes open wide during enrollment and recognition.

• Glasses

  • Depending on the strength of the prescription, the lenses of glasses can distort the camera’s view of the employee’s face and irises. It is recommended that employees remove their glasses during enrollment.

  • Glasses can be worn during recognition, but it can increase the possibility of false rejections or false acceptance of other users.

• False Eyelashes or Colored/Patterned Contact Lenses

  • Iris Recognition works by illuminating the iris with invisible infrared light to pick up unique patterns that are not visible to the naked eye. The camera then captures a high quality image of the whole eye. The PDF below details some of the unique patterns of the iris.

  • Cosmetic Accessories, such as false eyelashes and colored or patterned contacts, can obstruct the camera’s view of the unique patterns of the Iris. It is recommended that employees remove fake eyelashes and colored/patterned contacts during enrollment and recognition.

• Face Masks

  • Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, use of face masks and other forms of PPE have become more common in the work place. If an employee is required (or has opted) to wear a face mask, they will need to remove the face mask during enrollment. This allows the iT100 camera to capture as much biometric data as possible.

  • Most of the recognition modes provided by Iris ID are capable of recognizing an employee while wearing a face mask. Results may vary, but if a large number of employees are required (or have opted) to wear a face mask, we would recommend having that device profile set to IRIS ONLY mode for a more consistent recognition process. The use of face masks in any other mode that uses a combination of Face and Iris recognition can increase the possibility of false rejections or false acceptance of other users.
